On the first anniversary of Ireland joining the ranks of countries fostering the culture of death Deacon Nick Donnelly asks what is stopping the Irish bishops from naming Enda Kenny’s role in legalising abortion. The scandal of this silence becomes more acute as a result of evasions over Dublin’s Mater Misericordiae University Hospital agreeing to co-operate with abortion and the prospect of other Catholic hospitals following suit. Deacon Nick notes that, there is the very real danger for the bishops that their prolonged silence will be interpreted as meaning something they don’t intend, such as, their acceptance of the political status quo about the legalisation of abortion.

In three months time a couple of hundred bishops, cardinals and lay experts from around the world will convene in Rome to take part in the Extraordinary Synod on the “pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelisation”. I must admit that, along with many other faithful Catholics, I view this prospect with a sense of growing concern. This is not a theoretical or academic concern, but a very personal concern that involves my life and important decisions I’ve made.

The new Secretary of State for Education has appointed a homosexual activist as a special adviser.
Nicky Morgan, who last month replaced Michael Gove as education secretary, appointed Luke Tryl, who was head of education at Stonewall, Britain’s main homosexual lobby group. Mr Tryl is also Chairman of the Dulwich and West Norwood branch of the Conservative Party and a former President of the Oxford Union. Many people with a similar background, including special advisers, have been fast-tracked into Parliament and become ministers.

A new manual on Catholic medical ethics has been published.
Manual on Catholic medical ethics: Responsible Healthcare from a Catholic Perspective has been written by Cardinal Willem Eijk and other distinguished experts in the fields of science, medicine, philosophy and ethics. All the authors are from The Netherlands and the book was originally published in Dutch. The editor of the English edition is Dr John Fleming, an Australian Catholic priest and internationally-respected bioethicist.
Limerick Church receives Cardinal’s visit

On July 6th the members of the Institute of Christ the King in Limerick were honored by a special visit from His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome.
